Hurricanes Young Leaders Join Forces to Give Back
Written by: Coach Bobby Floujeh

For the U9B Mississauga Hurricanes, hockey isn’t just about breakouts and backchecks, it's about building character, leadership, and community spirit from a young age. This week, the youngest of our rep Hurricanes proudly stepped up to support a cause that matters deeply to one of our own: helping local families in need through a community food drive.

Amy Shugar Leads the Charge

This initiative was spearheaded by Amy Shugar, our Gold Sponsor (Amy Shugar Realty), whose generosity and passion for both hockey and community are nothing short of inspiring.

Amy’s story is powerful. As a lifelong hockey player, she grew up in a time when opportunities for girls were limited, often facing barriers simply because of her gender. Her determination and love for the game carried her through and today, as a successful realtor and community leader, she’s focused on paving the way for the next generation.

Her leadership extended off the ice this week as she led a food drive to support Mississauga families facing food insecurity. And our U9B Floujeh Hurricanes were right there beside her front and centre in the community, wearing the Hurricanes logo with pride, helping collect donations, and learning the importance of giving back.

Why This Food Drive Matters

Food insecurity affects far too many in our city. In Mississauga, 1 in 13 residents rely on food banks. With Thanksgiving around the corner, this is a critical time to support families who need a hand.

The goal is simple but impactful: Fill three full hockey bags with non-perishable food to help local food banks stock their shelves for the holiday season.

Lessons That Go Beyond the Ice

For these young players, this isn’t just another team activity, it's an opportunity to grow as leaders and community members. By supporting Amy’s food drive, the girls are learning:

  • Empathy & Responsibility — understanding that small actions can create meaningful change.

  • Leadership in Action — seeing what it means to lead by example, just like Amy.

  • Community Connection — recognizing that being a Hurricane means making a difference off the ice too.

  • Hockey Is More Than a Game — it’s about teamwork, heart, and contributing to something bigger.

These experiences shape not just stronger athletes, but better people.
