Hurricane Alert! MGHL Taking the Pre-Season Tourneys By Storm!

The MGHL had a great showing at the various pre-season tournaments over the September 22-24th weekend!

Several Mississauga Hurricanes took to Niagara for the annual Niagara Rapids Fall Classic pre-season Tournament this year, and our Hurricanes were pushing hard for wins!

In a thrilling U18A Championship game, reminiscent of last season’s showing in Niagara, our MGHL Hurricanes dominated the playoffs! Our U18A Buzziol Team blazed through the competition with an impressive 3-0-1 overall record. The team left their mark in the round robin with a dominant shutout victory; the North York Storm were swept up, 5-0, by our forceful Hurricanes! Heading into the semi finals, U18A Buzziol faced the Whitby Wolves, but the fierce competition couldn’t take a bite out of our Hurricanes, who secured another shutout win, 2-0, sending them into the championships.

On the other side of the pool, our U18A Macintosh/Sommerville was making waves of their own; they matched U18A Buzziol’s impressive round robin record of 3-0-1 and delivered a duo of jaw-dropping shutouts. The North York Storm and Chatham-Kent Crush could not stomp out our Hurricanes, falling 1-0 and 6-0, respectively. In the semi finals, U18A Macintosh/Sommerville had an epic showdown with another Hurricanes Team, U18A Summers, and managed to secure a gripping 4-2 win, setting up a championship clash with their fellow Hurricane counterparts!

While both teams competed hard in the finals, it was U18A Buzziol that emerged triumphant, seizing the GOLD with a final score of 4-1. Though U18A Macintosh/Sommerville fell short of the gold, they showcased incredible sportsmanship and skill throughout the tournament, earning themselves a well-deserved SILVER Medal. What an amazing accomplishment for all our Hurricane’s teams leading up to what is sure to be an exciting season!

This Tournament saw several other Mississauga Hurricanes make it to the playoffs in Niagara. Our U18A Summers Hurricanes had an overall record of 1-1-2 in round robin play, landing fourth in points out of a pool of eight. Heading into the semis, our Hurricanes pushed their skills, but were edged out, 4-2, by our U18A Macintosh/Sommerville Team. U18BB’s Eddie Team was ready to hit the ice, achieving second in points out of a pool of seven, and managing a solid 3-1-0 overall record, including an excellent 3-0 shutout win against the Whitby Wolves. While our Hurricanes worked to keep their focus in their semi final playoff, the Wilmot Wolverines made it through this round with a final score of 4-1. In the U15A bracket, our Coreschi Team landed second overall in points out of a pool of six during the round robin, with a 2-1-1 record. After some fantastic hockey, our Hurricanes blew over the Sudbury Lady Wolves for a 3-0 shutout, which pushed both teams forward into the semis to face off again! This time, the Sudbury Lady Wolves received redemption, with a 5-0 win over our U15A Coreschi Team. Our final Niagara playoffs shoutout goes to our U13BB Ferguson Team. Coming in at second place in a pool of six with an overall record of 3-1-0, our Hurricanes disrupted the flow of tourney host team, the Niagara Falls Rapids, in a 3-0 shutout game, propelling the ‘canes into the semis. Our Hurricanes fought hard, but the St. Catherines Jr. Brock Badgers managed to squeak out a 2-1 win in the end.

The Oakville Harvest Classic also was underway the weekend of September 22-24th, and our Mississauga Hurricanes were there for the excitement!

U13AA Locicero came in strong for their first game of the tournament with a shutout against Biggby Coffee, 4-0. They kept that winning momentum going for a three-way tie for first out of a pool of ten in round-robin play, with an impressive overall 3-0-0 undefeated record. The team kept icing out the competition into the playoffs with another 3-0 shutout versus the Nepean Wildcats, followed by a 2-1 win over the Burlington Barracudas. The Championship game proved a challenge, with our Hurricanes taking second place to the undefeated Connecticut Jr Rangers, securing a hard fought SILVER Medal in the finals!

Making it into the playoffs, our U13B Bozicevic Team descended on the ice with a gale-force wind, starting off round robin play with a nail-biting 1-0 win against the feisty North Halton Twisters. Our Hurricanes continued to battle hard, striking down the formidable Lakeshore Lightning, 2-0; a game that highlighted not only our Hurricanes prowess but also the Lightning's exemplary sportsmanship. Finishing up the round robin with an overall 2-1-0 record, and second in points out of a pool of four, U13B Bozicevic made their way into the semi finals. Despite a valiant effort, the Hurricanes faced a formidable challenge in the playoffs, ultimately falling 0-5 to the skilled Kanata Rangers. Though their playoff journey may have concluded there, our Hurricanes are resolved to further hone their skills and get back out on the ice and their coaches and families are so proud!

What a phenomenal effort from all of our competing Mississauga Hurricanes in the annual Niagara and Oakville Tournaments. The MGHL is excited to see what’s in store from our amazing athletes as the regular hockey season gets underway.
