2021 President's Message
2020 was a year that none of us will forget.

The pandemic and resulting lockdowns brought a year of uncertainty, disappointment, and fatigue to our communities. We had to take measures and make decisions we’ve never fathomed possible before.

Practice. No practice. Half-practice. Arenas closed. Arenas opened. Arenas closed.

Thank you, our MGHL players, parents and community, for the patience and understanding you showed through it all. For the trust you put in myself and the MGHL board to keep you informed and ready to play. And for your continued commitment to our organization.

Because of you, as I look to 2021 I do so with renewed hope and optimism.

Hope that this year, we will improve how we communicate with you. This will begin with the launch of our new, much-requested and much-needed website in February and will continue with regular updates on playing status and more engagement across our social media channels.

And optimism that 2021 will be a year of improved mental and physical health for our players and community. The current lockdown and prolonged restrictions have taken a toll on all of us. Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney shared earlier this month that 45% of hockey parents are worried about the mental health of their children. You’ve asked for us to help with drills, tutorials, and activities players can do while off-ice to stay game-ready and healthy. While I don’t have anything to announce at this moment, trust that more information is to come. And if you are a local business who is interested in working with us to offer our community these services, please contact me.

A decision on our House League season will be made shortly, and although it may not be the decision any of us wanted, I remain hopeful that we will see a return to play this year. Because, truth be told, I can’t wait for our players to get back on the ice. I know you feel the same.

I look forward to seeing this year of difficult decisions be forever behind us.

But if 2020 did offer us something positive, let it be the importance of connection. As many of us struggle emotionally during days in lockdown, we need each other more than ever. I hope that during these moments you see your MGHL family as a place of comfort and connection, and your teammates a source of solace and strength.

Although we may not be able to cheer you on from the stands, we are here virtually, and we are rooting for you.

In closing, I want to share that we welcomed new members to our executive last month who are already making a huge impact. Please join me in welcoming Brittney, Candace, Jennifer and Jessica. I see the work they, and the rest of the MGHL Board, is doing during this time to advocate for our players and families and I know great things will happen once we get back on the ice.

I wish you health and happiness, and a return to play. Go Hurricanes.
