Celebrating International Women’s Day with the MGHL
March is International Women’s month and March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global day in which we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women across the world.

To celebrate International Women’s month we are showcasing some of the women and girls who show their Hurricane pride, have paved the way for others or are role models for the future of our league.

Today, we are highlighting two of our female coaches and leaders – Darcy Breakey, head coach of the Jr. Hurricanes, and Brittney Cosmo, head coach of our U15 AA Hurricanes.

Here’s what they both had to say in reflection of International Women’s Day, and their role as female coaches for female players:

"As a female coach, I want to be a role model my players can look up to. As a female that has played the female game, instilling values and courage in my players that 'anything is possible' is the most important power I want to pass on. I truly believe they can do anything they set their minds to.” - Brittney Cosmo, U15 AA Head Coach

“Coaching is not only a way to remain a part of the game I love but it also gives me the opportunity to make sure that my players are seeing themselves reflected in all areas of the game (coaches, referees and beyond).” – Darcy Breakey, Jr. Hurricanes’ Head Coach

NEW! Read part two in this series, featuring U15AA player Addison Gutcher.

On what hockey can do for women:

“I hope that inspiring the younger generations of female athletes can bring equality in hockey, and put females in positions they deserve moving forward, whether that is in coaching, playing in our own professional league or within the OWHA itself.”- Brittney Cosmo

“It's important that players use our program to learn the life skills they can take with them long after the game ends. Hockey can instill confidence, teach leadership and provide great opportunities for these young women. What they learn through sport they will take with them into boardrooms and to decision making tables.” – Darcy Breakey

And on why they do it:

“It has been an honour to be a head coach and give back to the game I love." - Brittney Cosmo

“I didn't have my first female coach until I was in my last year of playing. It took 14 years for me to see myself reflected behind the bench. If we can see it, we can be it.” – Darcy Breakey
