Mississauga Midget C Chiefs Win Wild Winter Classic Tournament

The Mississauga Midget C Chiefs team, comprised of young ladies from the MGHL Midget House League program, remained unbeaten with 3 wins and a tie to win the West Northumberland Wild 2010 Winter Classic Tournament.  In the first game on Friday afternoon the Chiefs met a physical Georgina team which ran up 17 penalties.  Forward Natasha F. had to leave the game after crashing into the boards and sustaining a knee injury.  The Chiefs stuck to hockey and came out on top with a 4 - 1 win, led by 2 goals from MVP of the game, Megan W., and steady goalkeeping by Julia M.

In the second game Saturday afternoon the Chiefs played the Ennismore Eagles and although the Chiefs significantly outshot the Eagles and controlled the play, the puck would not bounce their way with the result that the game ended in a 0 - 0 tie.  MVP of the game, goalie Emma H., earned the shutout.  The third game was played Sunday morning against the host West Northumberland Wild and the Chiefs rang up a 4 - 0 win with MVP of the game Julie van W. scoring a goal and contributing 2 assists and Emma H. collecting her second shutout.

The stage was thus set for the championship game against the Chippewas of Georgina Island on Sunday evening.  Georgina played disciplined hockey this time around and both teams produced a fast paced, close checking, exciting hockey game.  MVP of the game, Katelyn G. opened the scoring for the Chiefs in the first period, firing a well placed wrist shot past the Georgina goalie.  Georgina tied the game at one all in the second period, leading to a nail-biting finish in the third period.  The Chiefs dug themselves into a hole early in the third by incurring a major penalty and a minor penalty but managed to weather the 2 person deficit with excellent defensive play.  After returning to full strength Kelli Anne D. whistled a wicked wrist shot past the Georgina keeper giving the Chiefs a 2 - 1 hard fought victory and the tournament championship.  In consideration of her tournament winning goal, at the awards ceremony Kelli proudly carried the Championship Banner on behalf of her happy team mates, which included forwards Tiffany D., Katie I., Megan C., Brittany L., and defence players Dana G., Nicole J.,  Olivia T., Jessica A., Lindsay V. and Taylor F.

The Championship winning Midget C team players are returning to their respective MGHL House League teams to challenge each other in the upcoming playoffs but will re-assemble for the occasional exhibition game as well as the Brampton tournament in April.  The Midget C girls are unbeaten this season and have excelled at every level at which they played.
